YCAPS Research Fellow Dr. Robert Mizo, Assistant Professor at the University of Delhi
participated and presented his research at the recently concluded Network for Education
and Research on Peace and Sustainability (NERPS) 5 th annual Conference at the United
Nations University in Tokyo.

The conference highlighted the role of role of new and sustainable technologies in
strengthening multilateralism through three thematic planks – peace, peace-sustainability
nexus, and sustainability. It offered an excellent platform for researchers and practitioners
to exchange ideas, workshop for innovative best-practices, present their work, and forge
partnerships for transdisciplinary research and collaborative action toward peaceful and
sustainable futures. The conference was headlined with keynote presentations by Dr. Måns
Nilsson, Executive Director, Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) and Rumiko Seya,
President, Reach Alternatives (REALs).

Dr. Mizo presented a chapter from their upcoming book, Climate Change, National Security
and Geopolitics: Strategies and Responses of Five Major Powers, co-edited with Professor
Scott J. Hauger. In his presentation, titled Theorizing Climate Security in India, Dr. Mizo
offered a theoretical understanding of how climate change has been perceived in relation to
national security in India. It explored India’s evolving engagement with climate change as a
security issue through three theoretical trends: securitization, riskification, and
climatization. Dr. Mizo concluded that while there have been limited efforts towards climate
securitization, particularly from non-state actors, the behaviour and responses of the Indian
state and its agents on climate change and security are best understood within the
riskification framework. He also showed how deep climatization of policy and security has
yet to emerge at any level of governance in India.
