On 3 March 2026, YCAPS hosted a Community Conversations event in Yokosuka titled “Climate Change and National Security: Perspectives from India.” The event welcomed Dr. Robert Mizo, Research Fellow at YCAPS and Assistant Professor at the University of Delhi, who spoke about the growing intersection between climate change and national security.
With a particular focus on India, Dr. Robert Mizo provided an in-depth overview of how the country approaches concerns related to national security and climate change. As a country defined in part by its geographical diversity, he shared valuable insights into how challenges can vary significantly between regions, highlighting the limitations of “one-size-fits-all” policy solutions. From a broader perspective, he also drew parallels and made comparisons with other global actors.

The presentation was followed by a Q&A session which, thanks to an engaged audience, developed into a lively group discussion. Participants explored specific issues related to climate and security in greater depth, before concluding with reflections on the future, particularly in light of current geopolitical developments.

The talk served as a prelude to an upcoming book, “Climate Change, National Security, and Geopolitics: Strategies and Responses of Five Major Powers,” co-edited by Professor Scott Hauger and Dr. Robert Mizo. The volume brings together studies from China, India, Japan, Russia, and the United States examining how their national security sectors have engaged with the idea of climate change as an existential threat.
YCAPS was pleased to host Dr. Robert Mizo and bring together enthusiastic YCAPS members for the discussion.
