YCAPS Sasebo members discuss legacy of WWII 80 years later

29 September, 2025, Professor Timothy Webster, "World War II at 80: The Unending Quest for Redress"

Seventeen participants gathered at the Machinaka Community Center YCAPS’ latest Community Conversations seminar in Sasebo. Professor Timothy Webster of Western New England University delivered a compelling talk examining ongoing legal and moral debates stemming from World War II, including landmark lawsuits, recent South Korean court decisions concerning “comfort women,” and a Japanese ruling related to the Battle of Okinawa. His presentation illuminated how private legal actions, though limited in scope, continue to influence governments, corporations, and public discourse on historical justice and redress. The event fostered lively discussion during the Q&A and post-event conversations, complemented by food and refreshments that encouraged informal exchange and community building.
