Evangelism, Persecution, and Hiding: The History of Christianity in Pre-Modern Japan
Getting to Know Japan Webinar (via Zoom) -- Tuesday, November 18, 2025 at 10:00 (JST)

This presentation will provide a brief introduction to the history of the first Christian mission to Japan in the 16th and 17th centuries. The first part will introduce listeners to the history of the mission, the limitations that acted upon it, and the sort of converts that it created. Following this, the presentation will explore the persecution of Christianity and the emergence of communities of hidden Christians (now commonly referred to as Kakure Kirishitan). It will argue that the beliefs and practices of the hidden communities that emerged from the 19th century onwards were intimately shaped by the experiences of persecution and hiding, and the circumstances of the early mission itself.
