YCAPS Members tour Yokosuka's Historic Tadodai House

On November 1, 2017, members of YCAPS were joined by members of Rotary International and other Yokosuka-area organizations for a tour of the historic Tadodai Residence in Yokosuka. The tour was organized by Retired Admiral Umino, JMSDF, and his wife Ryoko, and was guided by two current members of the Japan Marine Self-Defense force.

The Tadodai residence was built as an official home for Yokosuka Naval Station’s commander-in-chief. The building was completed by the Design of Kotaro Sakuri (1870-1953) in 1913. It is notable for his blend of Japanese and Western architecture. The residence has been home to 34 high ranking Japanese military officials in succession until 1945.

By the end of World War II, U.S. forces has assumed command of the residence and a total of nine successive U.S. naval commanders resided at the home until 1964 when the residence returned to Japan Defense Agency. It was designated as an Important Cultural Property in spring of 2016.
