The National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS) is proud to present an exciting event in Tokyo. This event will feature Dr. Indra Alverdian, Assistant Professor at the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS). We will also be joined by Dr. John Bradford, Executive Director of the Yokosuka Council on Asia-Pacific Studies (YCAPS) who will give valuable perspective as a discussant.

Indonesia’s maritime governance has a distinct national character. This character is centered on the defining theme of its motherland concept (Tanah-Air), which envisions Indonesia’s islands and waters as a unified national political entity. This motherland concept has three pillars––the political culture of unity based on Pancasila ideology, the strategic culture of turning of the times from dark to golden periods, and Indonesia’s geopolitical position at the world’s crossroads. The defining theme of unity in national political culture has shaped the evolution of Indonesia’s maritime policy from 1945 to 2019.
