    Dr. Hirofumi Kato, the Director of the Center for Ainu Studies at Hokkaido University, will provide an introdutory overview of the history and culture of the Ainu and other peoples native to Japan's northernmost island.

    Dr. Hirofumi Kato's archaeological career began in 1985 with his graduate studies at the Graduate School of History and Anthropology, University of Tsukuba, Japan. Then, he conducted and taught archaeology and Area Studies at the University of Tsukuba, the University of Shimane, and Hokkaido University (from 2001). In October 2010, he took up the professor of archaeology at the Centre for Ainu & Indigenous Studies, Hokkaido University. He was also appointed as the Director of the Center in April 2020.
