Youth Leadership for Climate Protection
Pacific Connect Webinar (via Zoom) — Monday, July 20, 2026 at 11:00 - 12:30 (JST)

Celebrate 海の日 Marine Day with Pacific Connect as we discuss the role of Pacific youth leadership in climate protection. Roughly half of the Pacific Islands region's population is under 23. Therefore, youth have a major role in climate change mitigation and prevention, not just in the future, but today. Sea level rise threatens shore communities while ocean warming and acidification threatens coastal ecosystems and livelihoods. From the landmark International Court of Justice advisory opinion and UN Resolution earlier this year that established international obligations for climate change prevention, to local cleanups and replanting mangroves, young people are leading the fight against climate change all across the Pacific. Dr. Sabrina Suluai-Mahuka will speak about the ways in which youth are protecting the enviornment in her home of American Samoa and in the broader Pacific region. Following her presentation, we will open up the discussion to audience Q&A. We hope to see you there!
