Community Conversation - In-person - Yokosuka
December 2 2021 at 17:30-20:00 (JST)
On 2 Dec., YCAPS will be reassembling for a long-awaited in-person Community Conversation seminar in Yokosuka! Please join us for a social reception before Professor Corey Wallace of Kanagawa University leads a seminar on Japan's national security posture under Prime Minister Kishida.
During 2021, Kishida Fumio not only transformed himself from a leadership afterthought to Japan's newest prime minister but reconstructed his political
personality. Most notably, once considered a dove on defence issues, Kishida emerged in the Liberal Democratic Party's presidential race as a committed hawk. Reflecting upon this metamorphosis and the political landscape after the 2021 lower house election, we will look at possibilities for further evolution in Japan's national security and defence policies under Kishida and the revision for the first time of Japan's National Security Strategy.
Corey Wallace is Assistant Professor at Kanagawa University, Yokohama, Japan. His areas of expertise are Japanese foreign policy, East Asian military and security trends, and science and technology policy. He was formerly the Einstein Postdoctoral Fellow in the Graduate School of East Asian Studies at Freie Universität Berlin. He completed his PhD at the University of Auckland, New Zealand. Corey was a participant on the JET program (2004-2007), and on returning to New Zealand he worked at the Ministry of Research, Science and Technology from 2007-2010 as a policy adviser in the innovation system policy team. Corey spent time in 2011 interning for a current member of the Japanese House of Councilors.
