YCAPS is delighted to invite Michael Cucek, Assistant Professor of Asian Studies at Temple University, Japan Campus, to discuss the sudden emergence of the anti-free immigration, anti-foreigner Sanseito political party The sudden transformation of this fringe, conspiracy-mongering online movement into formidable political party, and the equally sudden normalization of anti-immigrant and anti-foreigner speech, seems to mark a watershed moment in Japanese politics. Japan had been previously seen as resistant to the kind of anti-globalization populism shaking and toppling elected governments around the world. Has Japan "caught up" with the rest of the world in terms of its right-wing politics? Is the Sanseito really something new, or just the new kid on the block?
