Since 2016, Shizuoka University professor M.G. Sheftall's research has focused on the recording and interpretation of the oral histories and life experiences of survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In his talk, he will explain the origin of this topic, and discuss what have been, for him, the most impactful learning points of his almost ten-year-long project.

M.G. Sheftall is a Professor of Modern Japanese Cultural History and Communication at Shizuoka University, a branch campus of the Japanese national university system. His writing and research activities focus on the modern evolution of Japanese national identity, with particular emphasis on the Japanese experience in World War II and the lingering effects of that conflict on both collective and individual Japanese consciousness. He grew up in New York City, and has lived in Japan continuously since 1987.
