Gender Roles in Japan
Getting to Know Japan Webinar (via Zoom) -- Tuesday, June 23, 2026 at 10:00 (JST)
This talk will examine how gender roles in Japan have evolved over the past 150 years. Although many people describe Japan as adhering to "traditional" gender roles, Dr. Holbrow will show how so-called traditional roles--where men work for pay and women manage the household--only emerged in Japan in the 1950s, and have been on the decline since the 1980s. She will also describe the successes and failures of government efforts to promote more egalitarian gender roles over the past 15 years.
