YCAPS is excited to announce the next event in the Community Conversations seminar series in the Yokosuka Community! This event will feature Dr. Robert Mizo, Research Fellow, YCAPS and Assistant Professor, University of Delhi, India, who will guide us in a discussion titled: “Climate Change and National Security: Perspectives from India”.

The intersection of climate change and security has become a significant topic of research over the past decade. Current climate science provides strong evidence that climate change will lead to increased insecurities and exacerbate conflicts. The critical question is how much attention defense sectors have paid to these scientific warnings and how they have adapted to enhance resilience against upcoming climate threats. Different national security agencies pursue various approaches in this regard. This talk examines how the security sector in India has interpreted, resisted, or integrated climate science over recent decades.

This talk is a prelude to the upcoming book titled, “Climate Change, National Security, and Geopolitics: Strategies and Responses of Five Major Powers,” co-edited by Professor Scott Hauger and Dr. Robert Mizo, which brings together studies from China, India, Japan, Russia, and the United States on how these national security sectors have engaged the idea of climate change as an existential threat. The book offers a reflection on what these engagements reveal about the transformation of global security thinking itself.
