Gender Roles in Japan
YCAPS Community Conversation (Yokosuka In-Person)
22 July 2025 – 18:15-20:30 (Japan)
YCAPS is delighted to announce next event in the Community Conversations seminar series in the Yokosuka community! This event will feature Dr. Hillary J. Holbrow, Assistant Professor at Indiana University.
This talk will examine how gender roles in Japan have evolved over the past 150 years. Although many people describe Japan as adhering to "traditional" gender roles, I will show how so-called traditional roles--where men work for pay and women manage the household--only emerged in Japan in the 1950s, and have been on the decline since the 1980s. I will also describe the successes and failures of government efforts to promote more egalitarian gender roles over the past 15 years.
