YCAPS is delighted to announce next event in the Community Conversations seminar series in the Okinawa community! This event will feature Mr. Matthew Poggi, Research Fellow with the Asia Society Policy Institute and the Council on Economic Policies.
This seminar will examine Japan’s economy and economic policymaking in the post-bubble era. The seminar will survey economic conditions in the aftermath of collapse of asset prices in the early 1990s, the subsequent so-called “lost decades, the policies of Abenomics, and contemporary conditions. The seminar will conclude with a discussion of current economic challenges such as its unfavorable demographic outlook and high levels of government debt, as well as opportunities such as the green transition.

Speaker:
Matthew Poggi is currently a research fellow with the Asia Society Policy Institute and the Council on Economic Policies. Mr. Poggi served as the U.S. Department of Treasury’s Financial Attache to Japan through 2020, and held numerous other posts during his 18 years at Treasury. Prior to serving at Treasury, Mr. Poggi worked as an economist for the Bank of Japan and an investment bank in Tokyo. He was a Mansfield Fellow during 2009-11, and he holds a BSc in finance and economics from Boston College, an MSc in economics from the London School of Economics, and an MPP from Columbia University.
