Political Turmoil in Iran:
Consequences for Asia & the Globe
YCAPS Community Conversation Series - 11 February 2026, 18:15 (Fussa In-Person event)
YCAPS is excited to announce our next event in Fussa. This event will feature Prof. László Csicsmann, Professor and head of the Corvinus Centre for Contemporary Asia Studies who will be presenting "Political Turmoil in Iran: Consequences for Asia & the Globe".
The anti-regime protests that broke out in Iran on December 28 reveal a serious crisis in the Islamist regime that has been in place since 1979. US President Trump threatened the regime with military intervention, which is particularly significant in light of the intervention in Venezuela. Although Iran has destabilized the region in recent years, it has remained stable as a state. The existential threat to the regime could have regional repercussions, e.g. on the Arab oil monarchies or, through minorities, on neighboring states, but its potential global impact should not be underestimated either, as freedom of navigation could be compromised at maritime chokepoints that are important for world trade. Iran-backed Houthi militias could step up their activities at the entrance to the Red Sea, while Iran could disrupt shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
