On April 6, 2025, members of YCAPS attended the 65th Tokyo Kendo Festival at the Tokyo Budokan in Adachi Ward. Organized by the Tokyo Kendo Federation, the event featured individual matches for experienced practitioners, ranging from 5th dan to 8th dan and hanshi level, as well as a senior division for participants aged 75 and above.

In addition to the high-level kendo matches, the festival included demonstrations of kendo kata, iaido, and jodo, which were held in a calm and focused atmosphere. These quiet, deliberate forms offered a striking contrast to the loud shouting (kiai) and the sharp clashing of bamboo swords in the kendo bouts. Together, they showcased both the dynamic and meditative sides of Japan’s martial arts traditions.

For YCAPS members, the visit was a valuable cultural experience. It offered insight into how martial arts continue to be practiced with deep respect and discipline in Japan, serving not just as a budo but also as a way to pass on the important values of bushido.

We’re grateful to the Tokyo Kendo Federation for organizing such a well-run event and Vice Admiral Fumio Ota for helping YCAPS organize the visit.
