YCAPS' ASPEN Initiative Has Held its Third Workshop in Yokosuka

The Allied Security Exchange Network (ASPEN) successfully hosted its third workshop in Yokosuka on November 15, 2025. The event brought together a diverse group of mid-career security professionals from across the US-Japan Alliance, including military, self-defense force, government, and academic participants. Held at the Mikasa Memorial Ship, the workshop aimed to foster skills development and strengthen social bonds among alliance security practitioners, serving as both a learning retreat and a community-building opportunity.

Over the course of the day, participants engaged in a series of presentations and dynamic simulation activities designed to deepen understanding of Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD) fundamentals. The program featured experts such as Colonel Joseph Scott providing an overview of planning processes, Colonel Tetsuro Fujimoto offering perspectives from the Japan Air Self-Defense Force, and Lieutenant Colonel Gary Sampson discussing threat air and missile strike capabilities and limitations. Facilitated group activities, led by renowned subject matter experts, enabled participants to collaboratively explore real-world scenarios, fostering dialogue and shared insights.

The workshop culminated in a lively evening dinner at Yokosuka Beer, a local izakaya and brewery. This provided an informal setting for continued camaraderie and professional networking. An optional walking tour of Yokosuka on the following day further enhanced participants’ appreciation of the region’s strategic and cultural significance. This event reinforced the vital importance of building enduring relationships and shared expertise among regional security professionals.
